The actual working of stone in the Makabe area is well known for the high quality of its granite started in the 14th century. The lightly colored lanterns are famous for their superb craftsmanship, the light touch of the beautiful carving, and their sense of weightlessness. Makabe lanterns are most often found in temples, shrines, and as well as large Japanese gardens. They gain beauty over time when moss starts growing on the stone.

Nowadays Makabe lanterns are also available in smaller sizes that allow to add elegance and grace to normal gardens. The granite is still provided by local stone quarries and each piece is hand-craved by Japanese craftsmen certified by the Japanese government.
