BENRIDO Year of the Tiger Tenugui
Description
Ito Jakuchu
Born in Kyoto in the 12th year of Kyoho-Kansei (1716-1800). He studied the Kano school while he was a blue-backed fish wholesaler in the family business, but at the age of 39 he handed over his family to his younger brother and began a life devoted to painting. While studying the ancient paintings of the former Ming and the Rimpa school of Japanese and Chinese, he worked on the sketches of animals and plants, and was particularly good at painting chickens. He was called a "fantastic painter" because of his unique style of painting. His masterpiece is "Ayae Doue".
