Miyabi Andon is an official Suruga basketry producer owned by the Sugiyama family for three generations and recognized officially by the Japanese government. Their craftsmen are widely recognized for their skills and expertise, two essential qualities to produce the best Suruga basketry.

This handcrafted flower vase looks like a lantern, with the thin handle that allows you to carry the vase around. It comes in a natural bamboo color and a dark color, obtained with urethane coating. When the flower holder is removed, the bamboo art work can also be enjoyed by itself - a true traditional Japanese piece of craftsmanship.

Suruga bamboo basketry from Shizuoka prefecture is different from most other bamboo basketry in Japan. It is unique for using round splints of bamboo without the skin being shaved off. It dates back to the beginning of the Edo period (1600 - 1868) when warriors almost exclusively made bamboo goods as a side job in more peaceful times. Being located on the highly frequented Tokaido road between Edo and Kyoto Suruga basketry became very popular as a souvenir for travelers.
