Tenugui with Pear, Shiba-Inu and Gulls Pattern (390)
Description
"150 Anniversary Edo Theme"
This tenugui is created in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of Rienzome. Artist Mutsumi Kagoshima, who is active in a wide range of fields such as ceramics and fabrics, drew an original pattern. It is a design that contains pears = pears dyed in the garden, dogs that were popular with Edo townspeople = Shiba Inu, and lilies that are famous as the capital bird of the Sumida River and Tokyo Bay (Edo Inland Sea).
TENUGUI - "Tenugui" is often translated as "Japanese towel", but this translation fails to cover their versatility and cultural significance. Tenugui are not only used as hand towels and handkerchiefs, but also function as fashion items, gift wrapping, souvenirs, sweat bands and padding (e.g. in the martial arts kendo), and of course as decorative items due to their often beautiful, funny or nostalgic patterns. Men also used them as extra padding for head wear and tied them around their head to keep sweat out of their eyes during summer.
Tenugui is a special product. Handmade, hand painted and with a lot of cultural history, it is a unique and beautiful Japanese craft and makes a versatile gift. As they are reusable and biodegradable, they are a great investment which you can enjoy for a long time.
*Please be aware that tenugui cloth by default never are hemmed, which allows them to dry very quickly.
Care Instructions:
Tenugui cotton is very gentle on the skin, durable and light. It easily absorbs sweat and moisture and dries quickly. The more you use them, the softer they become.
- New tenugui may give off color when getting wet. It is recommended to wash them with cold water and without other laundry the first 3-4 times.
- Please avoid using optical brighteners and bleaches.
- Please note that even highly alkaline detergents may discolor or damage the fabric.
- After washing, please carefully stretch out and air dry. Dryers are not recommended.
