KATO STONE MASONRY
True Japanese Stone Lantern MISAGIGATA
True Japanese Stone Lantern MISAGIGATA
Description
The Misakigata lamp is a true masterpiece of Japanese stone carving. It is made of five stories that combine round and angled shapes to a very harmonic whole. The word Sakigata literally means small peninsula. It is possible to place a candle or LED inside the stone lantern, so that it makes a beautiful garden accessory at night.
The actual working of stone in the Makabe area that is well known for the high quality of its granite started in the 14th century. The lightly colored lanterns are famous for their superb craftsmanship, the light touch of the beautiful carving and their sense of weightiness. Makabe lanterns are most often found in temples, shrines as well as large Japanese gardens. They gain beauty over time when moss starts growing on the stone.
Nowadays Makabe lanterns are also available in smaller sizes that allow to add elegance and grace to normal gardens. The granite is still provided by local stone quarries and each piece is hand-carved by Japanese craftsmen certified by the Japanese government.
This lamp has been manufactured by Kato stonemasons. This company has a long tradition of hand carved granite products such as lanterns and graves. Due to the high skill of their artisans they also often support the repair and restoration of stone lamps and fences of old Japanese temples and shrines.
