Description  

Shofuan is a famous producer of Incense but also traditional kimonos and accessories in Kyoto. Kyoto has a very specific style with beautiful motifs and bright colors creating a pattern usually very elaborated.

This beautiful wooden box covered with Japanese paper has 12 drawers use to store the 12 Incense pouches, one for each month of the year that are matching the seasons and events of Kyoto. Refill of Incense can be bought but the box can also be use to store jewels or small objects. With an elegant and precious look it is a very nice decoration.
The 12 types of Incense included in the box are the following:
  • January - Hatsukama: It is the ceremony at the beginning of a new year practiced in Tea Ceremony rooms and Classes to greet everybody and this new year starting. It has the perfume of the ancient Japan, a calming and relaxing smell.
  • February - Haru ha Akebono: It means the spring is beginning when the weather starts to get warmer and the nature become more colorful. It smells like a forest, soft to the heart it is said to release stress.
  • March - Gion Hanami Koro: The Hanami Korou is a street crossing Kyoto from North to South, Gion being the center part and also the main street. Gion district was built in front of the Yasaka Shrine in the Middle Ages. It is a high place for Geisha (called Geiko in this part of the city) and also a national historical preservation district with old and beautiful buildings. With a rich, sweet and sensual perfume it brings happiness.
  • April - Omuro Zakura: It is the name given to the Sakura of the Ninna-ji in Kyoto. This type of Sakura has been called so since the Edo period. It is a Sakura of short height that blooms late. With a flowery and elegant fragrance, it brights one's feeling and calm the nerves.

  • September - Fuyou: It means Cotton Rose, also called Confederate Rose, they are from the Hibiscus family. With its sweet fragrance, this incense will refresh your mind and give you energy.
  • October - Takagamine Kouetsu: It is an ancient part of the Kyoto Area famous for its temple. THis incense will bring you bright and positive feeling, it also increases concentration.

  • December - Jyoya no Kane: It is a tradition of Japan to mark the end of the year and the beginning of a new one. On the 31st of December bells will ring 108 times. The number 108 is assumed to be bad in Japanese Buddhism and thus ringing the bell is it eliminate all human faults out of one's heart such as desire, hatred or jealousy. It also represents the "four and eight forms of suffering" another notion of Japanese Buddhism.
