Unique wood mosaic craft from Hakone

Yosegi-zaiku wooden marquetry dates back all the way to the Edo period and uses different types, textures and colors of wood to create unique, items. KIRO consists of four skilled craftsmen, whose particular strength is the creation of objects using the "muku" method, which means carving from entire blocks of wood mosaic. The "himitsu bako" secret puzzle boxes are especially unique as only very few craftsmen masker this skill.

It takes approximately ten years for a craftsman to become proficient in Yosegi. A lot of training, attention to detail, creativity and knowledge is required in order to make beautifully fitted patterns and smooth products without sharp edges.

The specialty of KIRO are products made using the MUKU technique. Where most Hakone marquetry is applying thin sheets of marketry to objects, KIRO is assembling blocks of wood to create specific patterns when carved in the final step.
