A family committed to rice

SHIMURA father and son handle the physically demanding tasks in the rice fields and the milling process. The women in the family manage the small store, directly sselling to consumers and handling phone and mail orders.

 

The store is situated in a residential area and is always bustling with consumers and restaurant owners seeking high-quality rice products.

Green Rice

The specialty of the SHIMURA rice farm is its green rice, a glutinous rice variety with a naturally green color grown free of pesticides and chemical fertilizers. When mixed with white rice, it adds delightful sprinkles of color, bringing more fun to a bowl of rice.

 

SHIMURA is the only farmer in Japan to grow this variety and most of the green rice is reserved by chef's upon harvesting.

Community service

Growing rice has always been central to local communities for hundredss of years. The SHIMURA family considers it important to pass on the culture of rice cultivation to the next generation. They regularly host events for school classes and the local community, providing opportunities to learn and participate in activities related to rice fields.

 

As part of SHIMURA's community service, he engages in creating local rice field art. Each year, intricate patterns are cut into the rice field, inviting people to immerse themselves in nature and be reminded of the rice fields in their neighborhood.
