SANONTO is a sugar unique to Japan made from sugar cane mainly used for making simmered dishes. It is sweeter than white sugar and adds depth to the dishes flavor. It has a slightly brown color from caramelization during its production.

During the sugar production process, granulated sugar is first extracted as crystals by centrifugation of the sugar solution. However, sugar remains in the sugar solution remaining after centrifugation. SANONTO is then made by repeatedly reheating to extract it as crystals. The molasses are heated again and again, which is the origin of the name "Sanon".
