- Kara-nuri is the oldest and most popular style of Tsugaru Nuri, identifiable by its beautiful speckled spots.
- "Nashiji" is the lacquering technique using gold or silver powder or flakes.
Ishioka Craft is a producer of Tsugaru lacquer in Aomori prefecture in Northern Japan. The Tsugaru type of lacquer has over 300 years of history and it differs in the way that instead of being spread all over the surface the different layers of colored lacquer are applied on chosen area with a spatula. From this technique comes the polychromed, mottled pattern.
