Zhuangzi was a Chinese philosopher in the 4th century BC, whose writings became the foundation for Taoism; a Chinese religion based on naturalness, simplicity and detachment from desires. In one of his stories he describes finding a skull on the side of the road, and then meeting him again when he sleeps that night. When asking how the skull came to his end, the skull answered: "In death there is no ruler above nor minister below. There are none of the phenomena of the four seasons. Tranquil and at ease, our years are those of heaven and earth. No king in his court has greater enjoyment than we have."
Zhuangzi had a hard time believing him and proposed to turn him back to life and bring him back to his family and friends. The skull answered he couldn't possible imagine: "casting away joy greater than that of a king on his throne, only to go back again to the toils of the living world".
The kanji on the front of the t-shirt means "Nanmenou" - the emperor sitting facing the South.
