Umeshu is a traditional Japanese liqueur that is made by steeping Ume plums in alcohol and sugar. To make umeshu, the plums are washed and soaked in a mixture of alcohol (typically shochu or sake) and sugar for several months to a year or longer. The resulting liqueur has a sweet and slightly sour flavor and can range in alcohol content from around 10% to 20%.

 

Umeshu is often served as an aperitif or digestif and can be enjoyed on its own or mixed with soda water or other beverages. It is also sometimes used as an ingredient in cocktails or to flavor dishes in Japanese cuisine. Umeshu is a popular drink in Japan, particularly during the summer months when it is served over ice as a refreshing drink.
